constitutional referendum was held in Kenya on 21 November 2005. Although many government officials, including President Mwai Kibaki, had campaigned for a "yes" vote, the proposed new constitution was rejected by 58% of voters.Because Kibaki so vigorously promoted the new 7constitution and based his election campaign around it, many voters used the referendum merely as means to voice their approval or disapproval of the Kibaki government. This would become the sentiment on which the victorious Orange camp would base their demands for snap elections, claiming the government had lost its mandate to rule as a result of the "no" vote by the people.the win by the "No" set the stage for the highly contested 2007 election,  through this referendum, orange democratic movement was formed and was seen as a front runner in the 2007 election,  however ODM lost  to Kibaki's PNU and this led to Kenya's worst  inter-tribal violence,
When Kibaki was sworn in and a grand coalition government was formed,  the reconciliation team led by the former UN secretary general Kofi anan it was agreed that all previous documents will be harmonised and an harmonised draft constitution will be fronted for,

Kenyans passed a new constitution in a peaceful referendum that could reshape the political landscape of east Africa's largest economy.

Greater checks on presidential powers were among changes voted through in the referendum, which came two3 years after allegations over vote-rigging in a presidential election ignited vio lence that killed 1,300 people.

The new legal framework was to adress the corruption, political patronage, land-grabbing and tribalism which have plagued Kenya since it won independence from Britain in 1963 according to Nzamba Githonga who chaired the commetee of experts.

According to political  analysts, the 2010 constitution was a curtain raiser to the 2013 election,  the opposers of the 2010 constitution was led by then Eldoret north mp William Ruto who had declared intention to run for the country 's top seat.
William ruto however supported uhuru kenyatta and won 2013 and 2017 elections consecutively,
3rd March 2018 president Kenyatta and Raila Odinga  met and formed a taskforce that was to lead reconciliation between the two side of political divides, a BBI taskforce was formed.
A path towards a referendum to amend the2010 constitution was drawn, its through this that political analysts say it's an effort by the political players to warm the floor  for the 2022 state house race that expected to be highly competitive.
